Prof. Narendra Shiradkar represented India in person at the IEC TC82/WG2 meeting in Ben Guerir, Morocco, in April 2025. This working group is a premier, invite-only experts body that creates the leading PV module qualification and safety standards such as IEC 61215 and IEC 61730. Prof. Shiradkar presented the results from the work performed at NCPRE by his PhD student Karan Rane and himself on failures caused by the High Temperature Reverse Bias (HTRB) operation of bypass diodes. This is essentially a new vulnerability they have discovered in the bypass diodes in PV modules which is currently not covered by any of the existing IEC standards. They requested that a new standard be formed by creating the new edition of the IEC 62979 to include the effects of HTRB. The experts from IEC TC82/WG2 concurred with this suggestion and Prof. Shiradkar was asked to be the project leader for the same. It should be noted that this is the first time in the history that a proposal from Indian delegation has been accepted at IEC TC82/WG2 to create a new international standard, and also this is the first time that an Indian expert has been asked to lead a standard in IEC TC82/WG2. This, essentially, is the beginning of the ‘Make in India’ for Solar PV standards!
